IIT Bombay Techfest 2023: Reliance Jio is set to collaborate with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to execute the government's plan of creating Bharat GPT, a homegrown GPT platform. Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan from IIT's computer science and engineering department is exploring GPT and Large Language Model (LLM) solutions for this venture. Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, revealed this partnership at IIT-B's Techfest, an annual three-day science and technology festival of IIT Bombay began on Wednesday.

Apart from IIT Bombay, a consortium of other IITs will also be working on the project. This consortium includes additional academic institutions like IIT Madras, IIT Mandi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, and IIM Indore. Solutions based on GPT and LLM are essential for business sectors such as telecom and retail. A year back, the Bharat GPT consortium was formed to create India-specific multimodal and multilingual models through a distinctive Public-Private Partnership initiative led by IIT Bombay.

The Bharat GPT consortium plans to release a series of multi-lingual and multi-modal foundational models along with the applications and their implementation recipes, which will enable grassroots innovations delivering India-centric solutions.

As per HT reports, Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani said, “In 2014 we launched 4G on the IIT-B campus during Techfest. Since then, our association with it has continued at various levels.” He highlighted his company’s partnering with the new age project in IIT-B. “We will be associating with IIT-B for an artificial intelligence project, Bharat GPT.”
