Older IITs continuing their boycott of THE Rankings, the second generation IITs have also not been able to make it to the top 500 list, IIT Ropar has slipped 500 ranks this year

With the older IITs continuing their boycott of Times Higher Education Rankings, none of the Indian institutions have figured among the top 500 in the world, except for the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru.

The IISc is the best-ranked university from India in the band 201-250, improving upon its previous year's ranking, where it was placed between 251-300 in the THE World University Rankings 2023.

In the recently announced THE World University Rankings 2024, as many as 91 universities from India have been ranked this year. India is the fourth most represented country in this year’s Ranking.

After IISc Bengaluru, it is Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University Kerala and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Science are the other universities which have ranked between 501 and 600.

Where do JNU, BHU, AMU, and DU stand?

Other major central and state universities in India some of which have also received the Institution of Eminence (IoE) status have been ranked in the band over 600. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Alagappa University have been ranked in the band of 601-800 in the World.

The University of Delhi has been ranked in the band 801-1000 and has improved from its previous year's rank, as it was ranked between 1001-1200 in 2023.

Second Generation IITs

As the older IITs (IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur) continue their boycott of THE Rankings, the second-generation IITs have also not been able to make it to the top 500 list. The IIT Guwahati has slipped 200 positions as this year it has been ranked between 601-800, while in 2023 the institute was ranked between 401-500.

IIT-ISM Dhanbad and IIT Patna have been ranked for the first time this year and they have found a place among the top 800 globally. IIT Gandhinagar is ranked between 801-1000 and is the only other IIT among the top 1000 in the world. IIT Ropar has suffered the most this year by slipping over 500 ranks compared to its 2023 Rank. The institute was ranked in the band 501-600 in THE WUR 2023, this year the institute has been ranked in the band 1001-1200.

BITS Pilani, another prominent engineering college in the country which was also one of the first institutions to receive the IOE status five years back is still stuck in the band 801-1000 and finding it difficult to break into the top 500.

Best among Private Universities

Among private universities, KIIT University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, VIT University, and Amity University have been ranked in the band 601-800.
