Virtual foundation day celebrations at IIT Ropar

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar celebrated its foundation day in virtual mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Higher Education Secretary K Sanjay Murthy was the chief guest and Dr Radhakrishnan K Koppillil, Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIT Kanpur, presided over the event. 

IIT Ropar Director Rajeev Ahuja planted saplings to mark the occasion. While addressing the gathering virtually at IIT Ropar, Sanjay Murthy said, “India’s transition to a developed country is possible only when we will have several world class educational and research institutions whose research and innovation will grab the attention of the world.” 

He said, “IIT Ropar is becoming a nucleus to create and facilitate a vibrant start up ecosystem. The success of ‘Make in India’, ‘Digital India’ and ‘Start-Up India’ depends on your individual and collective contributions towards these programmes.” 

Cultural programme

To mark the occasion, the Board of Cultural Affairs of IIT Ropar also arranged a special programme by ‘SPIC MACAY’ featuring an Indian classical music performance by Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.  IIT Ropar tweeted, “@iitrpr celebrated the foundation day today (virtually). Sh. K. Sanjay Murthy graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. @radhakr272 presided over the function. Trees were planted adjacent to the Foundation stone by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director @iitrpr. @EduMinOfIndia.” 

IIT Ropar is second best in India, according to Young University Rankings 2022 released by Times Higher Education (THE) recently. The rankings, which were launched in 2012, assess the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. Last year, the institute bagged the first rank in the country in the same rankings,
