Girl with 16 medals steals the show at VTU convocation

Bushra Mateen, a BE civil engineering student at SLN College of Engineering in Raichur, Karnataka, was the centre of attraction at the 21st annual convocation of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) held at Jnanasangama. She is the first student to have won the highest number of gold medals (16) in the history of VTU. Before her, Asmath, a BE Civil student of Sahyadri College of Engineering, Mangaluru, won 13 medals. 

Bushra, who attended the convocation wearing hijab, received a rousing welcome from the gathering, which included Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, Karnataka Higher Education Minister C N Ashwath Narayan and VTU Vice-Chancellor Karisiddappa, when she went to receive the medals. 

While Om Birla delivered the convocation address, CN Aswatha Narayan was the chief guest. As many as 57,498 BE/BTech, 902 BArch, 4,362 MBA, 1,387 MTech, 33 PG diploma degrees and 575 PhD degrees were awarded on the occasion. 

PhD fellowship amount to be increased to INR 25,000 

Aswatha Narayan said, scope for venture capital and partnerships will be created at VTU in collaboration with industries. He said agreements will be inked with Global Capability Centers (GCCs) to promote research among professionals and the monthly fellowship for those who are pursuing a PhD at the university will be increased to INR 25,000 in order to promote research.
