The Central government aims to open a minimum of one medical college in every district of India, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at an event at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his government wants to open at least one medical college in every district of the country. He was speaking at an event organised to dedicate 35 pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants to 35 States. These oxygen plants were established under the PM CARES Fund.

He lauded the achievements of his government during the Covid-19 pandemic and expressed happiness that the oxygen plants are being dedicated from the land where the life-giving forces like Ayurveda and Yoga gained strength.

The Hindu Business Line quoted PM Modi, “The facilities India prepared in such a short time span to fight the coronavirus pandemic, shows the capability of our country. Network of about 3,000 testing labs were created from just 1 testing lab, before the pandemic. India has transformed from being an importer to an exporter of masks and kits. Facilities of new ventilators were made available even in remote areas of the country.”

He also stated that some years ago only a few states had AIIMS facilities, now the government is working towards taking AIIMS to every state, “We are moving fast from 6 AIIMS to build a strong network of 22 AIIMS. It is also the goal of the Government that there must be at least one medical college in every district of the country,” he added.

Earlier India used to produce 900 metric tonnes of liquid medical oxygen a day but with the increase in demand, the country's medical oxygen production has grown more than ten times.
