The Gujarat legislature was informed that a total of 700 government-run primary schools in the state are being managed by a single teacher who teaches all students of classes 1 to 8.

While replying during the Question Hour, the state government has said that around 86 government-run primary schools were closed and 491 were merged in the past two years. Moreover, 25 primary schools in the Junagadh district has been shut down.

33 districts of Gujarat have the highest number of primary schools being run by a single teacher. These districts include Kutch where 100 such schools are running with one teacher each, tribal districts of Mahisagar with 74 such schools and Tapi with 59 such schools.

Such schools are also present in the districts with huge urban pockets such as 16 schools in Rajkot, 38 in Vadodara, four in Ahmedabad, and 43 schools in Surat.

Only in Kheda and Bhavnagar, there are no such schools with a single teacher.
