The Karnataka High Court will hear a plea today against the hijab ban in several junior colleges of the state. The HC will hear three petitions seeking a declaration from the court that they have a 'fundamental right to practice essential religious practices, including wearing of hijab (headscarf) as per Islamic faith, on college premises.'

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “All the concerned people (in the Udupi hijab row) should keep the peace & let children study.” He added that the matter will be presented in the Karnataka High Court and that everyone should wait for their decision.

Two Muslim students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration at Bhandarkar College of Art and Science in Kundapura have recently filed a petition against the Hijab ban in colleges. This is the third petition to be filed in regard to the hijab ban before the High Court. All three petitions will be heard by the Bench of Justice Krishna S Dixit at the Karnataka High Court today.

The third petition was filed by a student of the girl's pre-university college in Udupi district urging to allow the right to wear a hijab' (headscarf) inside the classroom. The writ petition was filed on behalf of the student Resham Farooq, represented by her brother Mubarak Farooq.

Meanwhile, a protest has erupted between students wearing saffron shawls and a Hijab outside a college in Karnataka ahead of the high court hearing today. The students were heard chanting Jai Shri Ram slogans.

On January 1, a government Pre-University college in Karnataka's Udupi barred six Muslim girl students from attending classes as they were wearing hijab. The college management cited a new uniform policy behind the reason for the ban. Soon after this, other government colleges in Udupi witnessed several students protesting against a ban on hijab.
