In a meeting conducted by the college between parents and teachers, the authorities decided to ban both saffron scarves as well as hijabs in classrooms.
Witnessing a protest by students of a state-run degree college in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district against Muslim women wearing hijab in classrooms, the college has finally come out with a resolution. As a way of protesting against Muslim women wearing hijab in classrooms, the students wore saffron color scarves. As a solution to the issue, the college on Wednesday, 12 January, decided to ban both hijabs and saffron scarves on the campus.
According to Indian Express, the college took the decision in a parent-teacher meeting. Talking about the decision taken against the protest, Principal Ananth Murthy said, "Officials were part of the meeting, and it was decided that Hindu students will not sport saffron scarves and Muslim girl students will not wear hijabs, but they can wear a shawl to cover their heads. If anyone violates the rule, they would be dismissed from the college."
Presently, the college has around 850 students of which quarter are Muslim. Earlier, while speaking against the protest, a faculty member expressed that the incident has taken place to instigate hatred among people.
The college took time to come up with a resolution as the authorities were finding it difficult to conduct a meeting with Covid-19 protocols in place. In order to conduct a meeting, College Principal Ananth Murthy had written a letter to the deputy commissioner and superintendent of Police seeking permission to hold it on January 10.
“I have about 30 years of experience and this is my 11th place of work. The dress code was never a concern and it never became an issue. This is the second time I have come across such a situation. It happened in 2018 also and a parents’ meeting was called then. The local representatives and officials who were also part of it helped to pacify the situation,” the principal said earlier.
