Amrita University launches SEER Lab to address Environmental Challenges
The SEER Lab is an innovative initiative combining five specialized labs, each focused on a critical area of environmental sustainability. The labs aim to tackle urgent environmental challenges related to water, soil, climate change, and marine ecosystems.
Amrita University has officially launched its integrated multi-lab system, the Sustainable Ecosystem and Environmental Resilience (SEER) Lab, at its Amritapuri campus. The inauguration ceremony, held on the campus, was graced by Swami Shubamritananda Puri, Director of the Mata Amritanandamayi Center, Europe. The event also saw the presence of Dr. Maneesha V Ramesh, Provost of Amrita University, and Dr. M Ravishankar, Principal of the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures.
Addressing Environmental Concerns Through Multi-Lab Integration
The SEER Lab is an innovative initiative combining five specialized labs, each focused on a critical area of environmental sustainability. The labs aim to tackle urgent environmental challenges related to water, soil, climate change, and marine ecosystems. This multi-lab system will provide a comprehensive platform for interdisciplinary research, fostering collaborations to understand the interconnectedness of ecosystems and their impact on human well-being.
Key Features of the SEER Lab
- Water Sustainability Lab: This lab is dedicated to water quality analysis, treatment, and management, with a focus on ensuring water sustainability both for research purposes and public use. It plays a pivotal role in finding solutions to water scarcity and quality issues.
- Soil Ecosystem Lab: The Soil Ecosystem Lab focuses on soil health assessment and ecosystem restoration. It aims to develop strategies for improving soil fertility, which is essential for agriculture and overall ecosystem health.
- Microbiology Lab: This lab studies the role of microorganisms in maintaining ecosystem health. By understanding microbial interactions, the lab works on solutions for managing diseases and promoting environmental well-being.
- Climate Change and Water Resilience Lab: Focusing on the impact of climate change on water resources, this lab examines water resilience and adaptation strategies in response to shifting climate patterns. It also explores sustainable approaches to water resource management.
- Marine Ecosystem Lab: The Marine Ecosystem Lab investigates the complexities of marine ecosystems and the relationships between various marine species. It is particularly focused on research areas such as ocean acidification, underwater robotics, and marine physiology. This lab plays a crucial role in the conservation and sustainable management of marine environments.
Dr. Sudha Arlikatti, Head of Research at the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, emphasized that the SEER Lab will provide invaluable insights into the interactions between water, soil, and marine ecosystems. The collaborative approach across these labs is expected to drive forward research that addresses both the immediate and long-term challenges posed by environmental degradation.
Through this initiative, Amrita University aims to position itself at the forefront of sustainable environmental research, developing strategies that not only address global environmental concerns but also contribute to the development of resilient, sustainable ecosystems.
