The Australian government has implemented a series of changes to student visas aimed at curbing applications from non-authentic students. Their goal is to ensure that students and graduates secure jobs commensurate with their skill levels. Check Australian visa updates here
Nearly 39 percent of temporary migrants entering Australia consist of students or graduates, making them the second-largest migrant group in the country following New Zealand citizens, as per THE. Therefore, the Australian government has tighten visa regulations for international students and low-skilled workers, potentially reducing its migrant intake by half in the coming two years. They have unveiled a series of changes to student visas aiming to clamp down on applications from non-genuine students. Their goal is to ensure that students and graduates secure jobs aligned with their skill levels.
As part of these actions, the government has opted to reduce the post-study work visa for international students by two years. This decision comes shortly after announcing extensions to post-study work rights, as per THE report.
Earlier, the undergraduates in some of the programs could stay and work in Australia for four years instead of two. Master’s students in specific fields had the opportunity to remain for five years rather than three. However, these durations have reverted to their original duration of two and three years, respectively.
The migration strategy that was released in December 2023 also outlines the conclusion of concessions granted to international students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes the cessation of unrestricted working hours for international students.
Among the changes are the closure of a loophole enabling students to switch to lower-tier educational institutions and a hike in the required savings for international students applying for a visa. The savings threshold will rise to A$24,505 (£13,000), marking a 17 percent increase from previous requirements.
Genuine Student Test
As per THE reports, "Genuine Student" test will be implemented for all international students. This measure aims to encourage applications from students genuinely seeking education at Australian universities or institutions, shifting focus away from those primarily seeking work opportunities. The Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement will be replaced by this test.
English Language Test Requirements To Be Increased
The government is also planning to raise the minimum English-language standards for student and graduate visas to align with an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 for student visas and 6.5 for temporary graduate visas. This is slated for implementation in early 2024. These changes also aim to guarantee that graduates transition into positions that correspond to their skill levels upon completing their studies.
