The incident took place in 2013 and now, after 10 years, the varsity has decided to calculate their marks by taking the average from other subjects and announcing the results.
Bangalore University lost the answer sheets of nearly 115 students and the students have not received their results since. The incident took place in 2013 and now, after 10 years, the varsity has decided to calculate their marks by taking the average from other subjects and announcing the results. Approximately six months ago, the University formed a committee to investigate the issue, and around 95 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate students are affected.
Report formed by the committee simply rejected the idea of calculating the results based on average of marks from other subjects calling it 'unethical and unlawful'. It also suggested action against erring officials. The committee also suggested giving the affected students another chance to take the examination for the missing papers.
The report submitted stated, "It is difficult to believe that the answerscripts are missing. This kind of mishandling amounts to breach of confidence, negligence and dereliction of duty and responsibilities on the part of employees of the evaluation section. The university is fortunate that students did not move court. We do not know why the students kept quiet. It raises doubts about the process of handling answerscripts by those involved in the process."
However, the university's syndicate meeting held in January went against the committee's report and decided to announce the results based on the average marks from other subjects. The report recommended initiating disciplinary action against officials responsible for the mishandling of scripts. "We are initiating steps to announce the results and issue the markscards as soon as possible," said registrar evaluation Srinivas C.
The committee also investigated a discrepancy in the results of the examination held in September 2021 for 6th semester B.Com in principles of practice and auditing at Government First Grade College, Channapatana. The report found that daily wage earners appointed for scanning answerscripts made errors in scanning the front sheet of the answerscript due to their inadequate qualifications, experience, knowledge, and other credentials. "If daily wage earners are to be employed, it is necessary that they be screened thoroughly," the report said.
According to the TOI report, the university has taken back the marks cards of some students and agreed to issue new marks cards. Students who have not passed in the subjects are allowed to take the examination through a special provision. The report further added that such flawed processes can erode the confidence of the student community and stakeholders' confidence. The report was submitted in November 2022.
