Canada Reports Highest at 91 Indian Student Deaths of 403 Since 2018, Followed by UK: Centre

According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs, in the past five years, 403 Indian students lost their lives while pursuing education overseas. Among the countries, Canada has reported the highest number of deaths among Indian students, totaling 91 cases. Get details here

In a written reply during a Rajya Sabha session, Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, provided comprehensive insights regarding the number of Indian students deaths overseas. According to the ministry's available data, a total of 403 instances have been recorded involving the loss of Indian students abroad from 2018 onward. These incidents encompass a spectrum of causes, ranging from natural occurrences to accidents and medical conditions. 

Notably, Canada emerges with the highest count, recording 91 unfortunate fatalities among a total of 34 nations where such incidents have occurred. When questioned regarding the high rise in Indian student deaths, as highlighted in the parliamentary response, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi pointed out there has been increase in the number of Indian students choosing to pursue education in that particular country. 

Overseas Education Challenges: Number of Indian Students Deaths in Foreign Countries 

Apart from Canada, the high numbers of Indian student deaths have been reported in the UK (48), Russia (40), the US (36), and Australia (35).

Additionally, Germany (20), Italy (10), the Philippines (10), Cyprus (14), and Ukraine (21) stand out among the countries witnessing a significant number of Indian student deaths. 

Meanwhile, countries with lower reported fatalities include Belgium (1), Bulgaria (1), China (9), the Czech Republic (3), Egypt (3), Finland (4), France (4), Guyana (1), Kazakhstan (5), Kenya (1), Korea (ROK) (3), Kyrgyzstan (9), Malta (1), Norway (1), Pakistan (1), Qatar (9), Romania (2), South Africa (1), Spain (3), Suriname (3), Sweden & Latvia (2), Switzerland (1), and Taiwan (6).

Safety and Security of Indian Students 

The Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan also emphasised that the government's dedication to safeguarding Indian students abroad. He pledged to address cases and prevent future incidents. Additionally, he noted regular visits by officials to colleges, ensuring support and interaction with Indian students. 

He said, “The safety and security of Indian students abroad is one of the foremost priorities for the Government of India.” He further added, the heads of mission/post and senior officials visit universities and educational institutions for regular interactions with Indian students and their associations.
