DU to start Dr. BR Ambedkar Chair; AC approves Faculty appointment in 12 Delhi Govt funded Colleges

Russian language will be taught for the first time at UG level in DU: Prof. Yogesh Singh

Delhi University will soon start the Dr. BR Ambedkar Chair, pending permission from the University Grants Commission. DU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Yogesh Singh, mentioned that for the first time, a Russian program has been included at the undergraduate level in DU.

During the Academic Council meeting, the Russian program in BA (Hons) under the Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies, Faculty of Arts was also approved on the basis of UGCF 2022. Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh said that for the first time in DU, Russian program has been included at UG level. He told that earlier it was taught in PG. During the AC meeting, the course curriculum was passed by accepting the recommendations made by the Faculty of Arts in this regard with minor modifications. This program will be implemented from the academic session 2024-2025.

On the teacher appointment process in 12 colleges funded by the Delhi Government, Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh said that all the colleges will be asked to issue advertisements for appointment to the vacancies by 31 July 2024. Taking cognizance of a suggestion from the Academic Council, the Vice Chancellor also approved the nomination of 3 members from the Academic Council in the committee constituted for the seniority of teachers of the University of Delhi and its affiliated colleges.

The recommendations of the Department of Anthropology regarding changes in the course material of the fourth semester of MSc Forensic Science were also accepted by the Academic Council.

DU students to pursue two degrees simultaneously

During the meeting of the Academic Council, the applicability of the provision of obtaining two degrees simultaneously was also considered and passed. Under this, one degree can be done in regular mode in the colleges/departments of the university and the other degree can be done in open and distance learning mode in the School of Open Learning, Campus of Open Learning of the University.

After implementing this provision within the university system in this initial phase, keeping in view the experiences that will be there, universalization of this provision can also be considered later. The modalities of pursuing two programs simultaneously will include various rules and conditions which are necessary to make this decision effective.

Degrees of Sanskrit universities will get equivalence

During the meeting, the proposal by the Sanskrit Department of the University of Delhi was also discussed, which provided for considering the degrees awarded by Central Sanskrit University, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University etc. as equivalent to the degrees awarded by the University of Delhi for the purpose of research and employment, in accordance with any field/specialization. Under this, Shastri to be considered equivalent to BA, Sammant Shastri to BA (Hons) (4th year UG), Acharya to MA, Shiksha Shastri to B.Ed., Shiksha Acharya to M.Ed., Vidya Varidhi to PhD and Vachaspati to D.Litt. was also approved.

The Sanskrit Department of the University of Delhi is providing optional courses/specializations like Vedic Vangmay (Vedas, Upanishads etc.), Philosophy (Yoga, Nyaya, Vedanta etc.), Sahitya Shakha, Sanskrit language and grammar, Dharma Shastra, Lipi Shastra, Modern Sanskrit Sahitya Shakha, History and Purana and Astrology etc. for PG students. The Acharya degree awarded by Sanskrit universities in these research papers will be considered equivalent to the Masters' programme in Sanskrit of the University of Delhi. Similarly, the Acharya degree awarded by Sanskrit universities in Jyotish Shastra and Vastu Shastra will be considered equivalent to MA in Jyotish Shastra of the University.
