The Government of India has decided that the study materials for all school and higher education courses will be digitally accessible in Indian languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution by next three years. This decision aimed at providing students with the opportunity to study in their own language.
In a directive issued by the Ministry of Education, all education regulators such as UGC, AICTE, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, and heads of INIs like IITs, CUs, and NITs have been instructed to facilitate the availability of study materials in Indian languages for all courses over the next three years. Additionally, UGC, AICTE, and the Department of School Education have been tasked with addressing the matter concerning state schools and universities.
According to the Ministry of Education, this initiative is aligned with National Education Policy 2020 that emphatically emphasizes that the diverse linguistic landscape of Bharat is a significant asset and strength that should be effectively harnessed for socio-cultural, economic, and educational development. The creation of content in regional languages will enhance the potential of this multilingual asset, paving the way for its more substantial contribution to the development of 'Viksit Bharat,' ultimately aiming to transform our nation into a developed country by 2047.
It has been stated in the report of PIB that, " The Government has already been working in this direction during the past two years, with translation of Engineering, Medical, Law, UG, PG and Skill books being done through the Anuvadini AI based App. These books are available on the ekumbh portal. In school education ecosystem also study material is available in multiple Indian languages including over 30 languages on DIKSHA. Competitive exams like JEE, NEET, CUET are being held in 13 Indian languages."
