The bill seeks to convert the National Rail and Transportation University, into Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.
Central Government today introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha to convert the National Rail and Transportation University, into Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, an autonomous central university.
The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill was introduced by Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, which seeks to expand the scope of the University from beyond the railways to cover the entire transport sector to support the ambitious growth and modernisation in the field.
Earlier on July 13, the Railway University in Gujarat’s Vadodara, deemed to be university, was granted central status by the Union Cabinet. The varsity was renamed Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.
Currently, the NRTI offers BSc in transportation technology, BBA in transportation management courses, and MSc in railway system engineering and integration.
Pradhan while introducing the Bill said: “The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2022 seeks to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009, inter alia, to provide for the establishment of Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya as a body corporate under the said Act.”
Pradhan said that the establishment of Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya will address the need for talent in the strategically important and expanding transportation sector and meet the demand for trained talent to fuel the growth and expansion of the sector.
He said that the Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya will carry out critically-needed research and development by creating innovative technologies to encourage local manufacturing and substitute the imports of expensive technology, equipment and products.
