Introduce internship embedded degree programme, UGC to universities

The University Grants Commission has asked institutions to introduce internship embedded degree programmes. The Commission has asked higher education institutions to update the status by October 10, 2021.

The apex higher education regulatory body has once again asked the HEIs to run courses that are job oriented and also offer degree courses that have internships components embedded. This is in continuation to the UGC letter issued in December 2020 when it issued guidelines for higher education institutions to offer apprenticeship or internship embedded degree programmes.

The new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 announced last year, also proposes that students at all higher education institutions should be provided with opportunities for internships.

The Central Government in its Budget Announcement of 2020-21 also emphasized on the need to make fresh graduates employment-ready with necessary knowledge, competencies and attitude. Following this, the UGC came up with ‘Guidelines for Higher Education institutions to offer Apprenticeship/internship embedded Degree Programme’ for embedding internship in general degree programmes offered by the Universities.

A letter issued by the UGC Secretary to universities reads: “Considering the interests of the students and society at large, you are requested to kindly promote apprenticeship/internship embedded degree programmes in your University as well as the college/institutions affiliated to your University. lf your University is already offering such apprenticeship/internship embedded degree programme/s, you are requested to share the relevant information with us by filling in a Google Form.
