JNU Molestation Case: Accused frequently visited campus; University prevents entry of outside vehicles
Following the molestation incident, Jawaharlal Nehru University has issued a circular preventing outside vehicles inside JNU from 10 pm to 6 am.
In another incident of molestation inside one of the premier universities in the country, Jawaharlal Nehru University, two female students were allegedly molested and there was an attempt to kidnap them in the intervening night of June 6 and 7.
As per reports, an FIR has been registered in the case and the accused has been identified and he is not a student of JNU. There are also reports that same accused tried to molest another female student within the JNU campus premises.
Following the incident, Jawaharlal Nehru University has also issued a circular preventing outside vehicles inside JNU from 10 pm to 6 am.
The JNU circular reads: “The Competent Authority has taken a serious view of the recent incidents where outsiders entered the JNU Campus and created law and order problems during the night hours. In view of this, it has been decided to restrict the entry of outside vehicles from 10 PM to 6 AM.”
The circular also states that all residents of JNU are to produce their Identity Cards at the entry gate whenever asked by JNU Security. “Further, all residents are advised to confirm and identify their guests at the main Gate either in person or through a phone call,” it reads.
According to a student of JNU, who did not wish to be named, there were some outsiders who attempted to molest a female student inside the campus. Speaking to Shiksha he said: “Around three to four youths who are not students of the university probably came to meet some faculty or student and while returning they saw a female student and tried to molest her and abduct her. This is a serious case of a security lapse on the part of JNU Security. We are feeling unsafe to venture out now.”
As per reports, a white Swift bearing registration number HR26DN2623, carrying drunk boys, attempted to kidnap two girls walking on one of the campus roads.
As per ABVP JNU, the guards revealed that this vehicle visits the campus regularly. It stated in a statement: “We are writing this to address the recurrence of such incidents and highlight the Chief Security Officer's negligence in addressing these pressing concerns.”
The students association has stated that the recurring incidents within the supposedly secure premises of the JNU campus highlight a severe lapse in security protocols. The fact that the same vehicle with intoxicated individuals has been allowed entry on multiple occasions raises serious doubts about the competency of the security personnel and the effectiveness of the security systems in place. “This negligence has created an atmosphere of insecurity and fear among the student community,” says ABVP.
