The association has also demanded an extension to be granted to the 2017 M.Phil/PhD integrated batch and 2019 PhD batch to make up for the time that these batches have lost owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
A delegation of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) today submitted their representation to the UGC Secretary regarding the revision of scholarship amount for non-NET, JRF and other equivalent fellowships.
The UGC officials assured the JNUSU delegation that several talks regarding the fellowship hike issues have been going on, and they would further discuss the concerns raised.
The JNUSU-led delegation today met Joint Secretaries Dr. Jitendra Tripathi and Dr. Avichal Raj Kapur regarding the ongoing issues being faced by the research scholars not only in JNU but across Universities.
The JNUSU delegation highlighted that the extension period for dissertation submission should be kept on priority and be granted. They highlighted how their University Administration has failed to provide an extension, leading to several research scholars opting for deregistration.
The students association have demanded that the UGC should direct the University Administration to be considerate of the crisis research scholars have gone through during the COVID period and the necessity to ensure an extension period for ensuring research work can be carried out by the scholars.
The delegation highlighted the necessity of a hike in fellowship amounts in JRF, non-Net and all other equivalent scholarships across departments. The JNUSU had carried out a signature campaign too regarding the same, which has been brought to the notice of the officials.
The students association also pointed out how despite the Delhi High Court ruling regarding the Non-NET recovery case, many students are not being returned the amount the University had taken from them in the name of Non-NET recovery.
The UGC officials have assured that several talks regarding the above-mentioned issues have been going on, and they would further discuss the concerns raised with the Secretary and get back to the JNUSU representatives shortly.
“We also raised that the UGC should take up the issue of reinstating MANF with the Ministries. On behalf of JNUSU, we will keep raising these demands unless and until the requests are accepted,” reads a letter signed by Aishe Ghosh, President, JNUSU.
