With educational institutions reopening after the summer break, students wanting to return to continue their studies are being hampered by the lack of safe transport out of the state. Internet shutdowns have also made it impossible to access information

Teachers from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Aligarh Muslim University and other central universities have expressed their shock and demanded the prosecution of culprits of Manipur sexual assault and violence on women.

The Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) have expressed their shock and anguish over the developing situation in Manipur over the past two months. The association has stated that the deeply disturbing visuals of violence, particularly the one which surfaced yesterday about the perpetration of sexual assault and violence on women are extremely worrying and unacceptable in any democratic society.

They have also alleged that the inaction of the State and the Central government even after two months of such violence is leading to extensive damage to the social fabric of the Manipuri society and is likely to bring life-long trauma to all groups, particularly women, children, and minorities. The loss of lives and livelihoods that have occurred in the state clearly indicates a palpable administrative and political failure.
“Breaking of an armed conflict and its escalation to such a grim situation within weeks in a border state like Manipur is practically impossible without the knowledge of either the State or the Centre,” stated FEDCUTA in a statement.

The lack of action on the part of the governments has also forced the Supreme Court of India to take a sun moto cognisance and has directed the Union and the State Government to apprise the Court of the action taken.

With educational institutions reopening after the summer break, students wanting to return to continue their studies are being hampered by the lack of safe transport out of the state. Internet shutdowns have also made it impossible to access information about the wellbeings of relatives and friends, thus compounding their distress.

FEDCUTA has demanded justice for the victims and the arrest and prosecution of culprits. It stated: “We stand hotly for an end to this mindless violence and appeals to all sections of the society for an engagement towards finding a peaceful resolution of the underlying issues. The Manipuri society has always been very resilient and at a time when the government has simply abrogated its responsibility, it is extremely important that the people come forward and help in this process.”
