Ministry of Education Launches Implementation Manual for Tobacco Free Educational Institutions
DoSEL launched an implementation manual for tobacco-free educational institutions (ToFEI) on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education launched an implementation manual for tobacco-free educational institutions (ToFEI) on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2024. The event was held in NEW Delhi on May 31, 2024, in collaboration with Socio Economic and Educational Development Society (SEEDS). The newly launched manual was designed on this year's WNTD theme "Protecting children from tobacco industry interference”.
The implementation manual consists of ToFEI guidelines that shall be adhered to by the schools and educational institutions. The guidelines have been issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to create a healthier and tobacco-free environment for students.
"All educational institutions should take steps to discourage the use of tobacco and safeguard children from being addicted to the use of tobacco by making the educational institutions a tobacco-free zone." Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of DoSEL said.
Meanwhile, Anandrao V. Patil, Additional Secretary of DoSEL highlighted the need to protect students from tobacco as a moral obligation amid health imperative. He further stressed the frim mortality rate due to the harmful consumption of tobacco and its adverse consequences.
Amarpreet Duggal, Joint Secretary of DoSEL has explained that as per the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), 2019, 8.5% of students in the age group of 13 to 15 consume tobacco.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by U.P. Singh, Director of DoSEL. He conveyed gratitude to all notables, members, and participants for their assistance and contribution towards the thriving launch of the Implementation Manual for ToFEI.
