Mumbai University hosts convocation ceremony for 2023 graduates

According to the official data, approximately 1.52 lakh students, including 79,741 girls and 71,907 boys were conferred during the convocation ceremony. These students have graduated in the academic year 2022-23.

Mumbai University Convocation: Mumbai University conducted its Annual Convocation for the year 2023 on February 7, 2024. The event was attended by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, UGC Chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar along with MU VC and Pro VC amongst other attendees. According to the official data, approximately 1.52 lakh students, including 79,741 girls and 71,907 boys were conferred during the convocation ceremony. These students have graduated in the academic year 2022-23.

While addressing the students during the convocation ceremony, Jagadesh emphasized on the importance of NEP 2020. "This generation is critical thinkers, risk takers, leaders, solution providers, we want our education system to be able to provide them with the correct platform and courses hence NEP 2020," he added.

Praising efforts made by Maharashtra, he said that the state is leading in making cluster university and implementing NEP 2020.

Praising the efforts of the degree holders, he observed the increasing participation of women in education.

A substantial 70-80% of the gold medals have been awarded to women, reflecting their exceptional achievements and dedication, Jagadish noted.

Meanwhile, Mumbai University also awarded 425 PhDs during its annual convocation ceremony. Last year, the varsity awarded 367 PhDs, which was a considerable jump from 211 PhDs in 2021-22. It was less than in pre-pandemic times, when the varsity awarded 419 PhDs in 2019-20.

In the pandemic year, the PhDs awarded by the varsity were at its lowest. According to information shared by the varsity, in 2021-22 only 211 PhDs were awarded, which was lower than 2020-21 at 153 PhDs.
