In 2021, the West Bengal upgraded Krishnath College into a full-fledged university and renamed it Murshidabad University.

West Bengal Congress chief and Member of Parliament Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to rename Murshidabad University as Raja Krishnath University.

In 2021, the West Bengal government has announced to upgrade Krishnath College located at Baharampur, Murshidabad into a full-fledged university and rename it Murshidabad University.
Chowdhury in his letter to CM has stated that the renaming of the institution is a matter of serious local importance and sentimental value and has said that its renaming has robbed the institution of its sentimental value.

“As you are aware, Knshnath College Berhampore is a renowned institution of higher learning in West Bengal. Upgrading this college to a university is a very welcome step by the Government of West Bengal.

However. dropping the name of Raja Krishnath in this newly constituted Murshidabad University has robbed it of its local sentimental value,” Congress leader writes.

He has stated that Raja Krishnath was a legend and a hero of the Bengal renaissance. Chowdhury writes: “He (Raja Krishnath) dreamt of establishing an institution of higher learning and donated his entire land for the cause. He is a great source of inspiration for the local youth of West Bengal.”

The college is a source of great pride for the students of West Bengal to study in a college/university established by Raja Krishnath who was one of the greatest heroes of the awakening of West Bengal.

“In view of the above. I shall request you to rename the newly constituted Murshidabad University as Raja Krishnath University (Murshidabad) in order to preserve and cherish the memory of the hero of the Bengal renaissance. As a public representative from Berhampore. I appeal to you to initiate necessary administrative and legislative measures for renaming the Murshidabad University,” he writes.
