UGC Hosts Inter-Regulatory Authority Meeting in New Delhi to Discuss NEP 2020 Implementation

One of the key recommendation of the NEP 2020 is to merge various regulatory bodies into one by creating Higher Education Council of India. Government of India has been holding discussions in this regard, but is yet to implement it.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is currently conducting an Inter-Regulatory Authority meeting at its headquarters in New Delhi, with officials from 15 regulatory bodies engaged in discussions on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across the country.

The meeting includes representatives from various regulatory bodies such as UGC, All India Council for Technical Education, Bar Council of India, National Medical Commission, and Dental Council, each responsible for overseeing legal, technical, medical, and dental education.

One of the key recommendation of the NEP 2020 is to merge various regulatory bodies into one by creating Higher Education Council of India. Government of India has been holding discussions in this regard, but is yet to implement it.

Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of UGC, highlighted that the purpose of the gathering is to strategize and ensure the effective implementation of the provisions outlined in NEP 2020. The National Education Policy, recognized as a landmark in Indian education, places a significant emphasis on unlocking the creative potential of students.

Key Recommendations of NEP 2020 for Higher Education include:

Inclusive Education:

Focus on extending education accessibility.

Aims to reintegrate two crore out-of-school children.

Targets doubling Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education to 50% by 2035.

Exit Options in Degree Courses (MEES):

Offers multiple entry and exit options for undergraduate degrees.

Certificates after one year, diplomas after two and three years, and a preferred four-year interdisciplinary Bachelor’s program.

Academic Bank of Credit (ABC):

Digitally stores academic credits from various accredited Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Facilitates conferring degrees based on earned credits.

Teacher Eligibility:

Mandates a four-year integrated B.Ed degree for teaching by 2030.

Technology in Education:

Proposes the establishment of the National Educational Technology Forum (NETF).

Aims to enhance learning, assessment, planning, and administration through technology.

Creation of a specialized unit for digital infrastructure, content development, and capacity building.

The ongoing meeting reflects the commitment to align regulatory efforts for the successful implementation of NEP 2020, a policy that envisions transformative changes in India's education landscape.
