UGC Issues Warning Against Misleading Online Degree Programs Amid Rising Concerns
The UGC reiterated that Institutions offering online degree programs are required to obtain approval from the UGC in accordance with its regulations.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a stern public notice cautioning against the proliferation of misleading abbreviations in the names of universities and colleges, particularly in online degree programs. The notice comes in response to the emergence of dubious online programs with acronyms resembling recognized degree programs such as BBA and MBA.
Highlighting the issue, the UGC pointed out one such program named '10 Days MBA' that has drawn the attention of the Commission. The notice emphasizes that the nomenclature of a degree, along with its acronym and duration, is strictly regulated by the UGC with prior approval from the Central Government.
Furthermore, the UGC reiterated that only universities established under specific legislative acts or institutions deemed as universities have the authority to confer degrees. Institutions offering online degree programs are required to obtain approval from the UGC in accordance with its regulations.
To assist stakeholders in verifying the authenticity of online programs, the UGC has provided a list of recognized Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) offering online programs on its official website, deb.ugc.ac.in. It urges individuals to exercise caution and ensure the validity of online programs before applying or enrolling.
The UGC's notice underscores its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of higher education and protecting students from falling prey to fraudulent practices in the online education landscape.
