UGC Releases Guidelines for Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme; Credit-Based Framework to Follow

A one-year apprenticeship training shall offer 40 credits which will be equivalent to 1200 hours of learning.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released guidelines for the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree programme (AEDP) in order to promote the employability of students at the undergraduate level. The AEDP programme shall be launched by the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from the January-February 2025 academic session as and when notified. Reportedly, the draft guidelines focus on credit and duration from the second semester onwards to a maximum of 50 per cent of the duration of the programme with a single internship stretch of one semester. 

The UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar stated draft guidelines mentioning "Significant step towards enhancing the employability of our youth". He further explained the requirement of the AEDP programme saying “Students acquire experiential learning alongside theoretical knowledge by formally embedding apprenticeships within degree curricula, equipping them with the competencies employers seek. We urge all eligible higher education institutions to take advantage of these guidelines and offer AEDP programmes to their students."

The guidelines will be open for public consultation and stakeholder comments in a few days. Once notified, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can launch the programme starting from the January-February 2025 academic session. The aim of the programme is to get the benefit of both an apprenticeship and a university degree. Further, the outcome-based learning in all degree programmes to get graduate attributes and desired proficiency levels. 

"The credit system is established based on training hours, (Credits as per National Credit Framework; 30 hrs training = 1 Credit. 1-year apprenticeship training = minimum 40 credits)" Kumar further added.
