UGC Secretary in a letter sent to vice chancellors and principals has urged the universities and colleges to Implement Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Undergraduate Students.

In a proactive move towards aligning higher education with the transformative initiatives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Prof. Manish R. Joshi, Secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has issued a letter to all Vice-Chancellors of Universities and Principals of Colleges, urging the implementation of "UGC Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Undergraduate Students."

The NEP envisions a holistic approach to education, emphasizing practical exposure and real-world experiences for students. To achieve this vision, the UGC has developed comprehensive guidelines that encourage undergraduate students to undertake internships with local industries, businesses, artists, craftspeople, and engage in research internships with faculty and researchers.

These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, thereby enhancing students' employability and fostering a passion for research. The UGC Secretary emphasized the importance of improving competency, professional working skills, expertise, and confidence among students through these internships.

The guidelines, accessible on the UGC website (www.ugc.gov.in), outline the framework for implementing internships at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Prof. Manish R. Joshi called upon all HEIs to take necessary actions to implement the guidelines diligently and effectively.

Furthermore, the UGC hinted at possible future reviews of the implementation of these guidelines by universities and colleges as part of the NEP-2020 implementation plan. The letter underscores the UGC's commitment to actively monitor and ensure the success of these transformative initiatives.

The UGC Secretary expressed optimism about the active contribution and participation of higher education institutions in the effective implementation of the NEP-2020 recommendations. This initiative is expected to not only enhance the overall educational experience for students but also contribute significantly to their readiness for the dynamic demands of the workforce.
