Delhi University is waiting for instructions from the city government to take a call on the reopening of campus, a senior official said.
Delhi University has said that it is waiting for guidelines from the city government to reopen the campus. Several students have been urging the Delhi University authority to reopen the campus for offline classes since many central Universities across India have already started the physical classes.
Earlier, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh had said that the decision to resume the physical classes will be taken after Diwali since there is a fear that COVID-19 might recur. "We can increase the timing of the existing colleges by a couple of hours, which could lead to the addition of more sections. This can help in adjusting the extra seats created and the EWS seats. This will be better than opening new colleges. In Delhi Technological University (where Singh was the VC earlier), we had kept the timings from 8 am to 6 pm, which was helpful. In case it is done, the staff will come in a staggered manner and the teachers who have classes in the latter half of the day can come late. This was a suggestion in case colleges want to do it," he told NDTV.
Meanwhile, Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia announced that the schools in National Capital will be reopened from Monday; i.e. November 1 for all classes along with educational institutions. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and noted that the COVID-19 situation is under control in the city but "we cannot let our guard down".
While speaking on the DU reopening, DU Registrar Vikas Gupta said, "Let the government issue something in black and white. Then we will decide."
The Delhi University had resumed laboratory classes for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students from September 16 but the attendance has been thin since then.
