ICMR's policy for medical colleges to be gamechanger in bringing innovation among doctors
The Biomedical policy of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is being seen as a game changer in bringing innovation to the medical field.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had launched the ‘policy on biomedical innovation & entrepreneurship' for medical colleges to create enabling policies and ecosystems for innovation and entrepreneurship development in medical education.
The ultimate goal is to positively impact human health and well-being, and the policy is expected to be a gamechanger in bringing an ecosystem of innovation-led entrepreneurship into the Indian medical field.
The policy is widely intended for scientists, medical professionals and technologists at dental, medical and para-medical institutes. The expected outcomes are up-gradation in national and international institutional rankings of medical colleges, active contribution of medical professionals in startup India, and satisfactory career path for medical professionals.
Health Minister inaugurated ICMR's biomedical policy this year
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and Dr Bharti Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare launched the ICMR's policy on Biomedical Innovation & Entrepreneurship for Medical Professionals, Scientists and Technologists in Medical, Dental, Para-Medical Institutes/Colleges in February.
The policy was launched to encourage medical professionals and doctors to pursue entrepreneurial ventures and doctors will also be permitted to undertake inter-institutional and industry projects alone or through companies.
The biomedical policy will promote innovation, technology development, interdisciplinary collaboration, skill development and foster entrepreneurship development and Make-in-India product development for societal benefit. The policy is created after consultation with government departments/ ministries/organisations including DSIR, AIIMS, IIT Delhi, DPIIT, DST, WIPO, and others.
