IIIT Basara invites tender for food contractor by Aug 6 following hunger strike by students
Students had already been demanding a change in the catering contract since the food poisoning case. 200 students fell sick after consuming food from the hostel mess in June this year.
IIIT Basara Students Protest: Taking action in line with the hunger strike by nearly 3,000 students, Telangana’s Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), also known as IIIT Basara, has released a tender notification for the mess contractors.
According to the notification, the IIIT Basara administration has now invited tender for mess contractors to provide food to nearly 9,000 students on the campus. The last date to submit bid for the contract of IIIT Basara mess is by August 6.
Students had already been demanding a change in the catering contract since the food poisoning case. 200 students fell sick after consuming food from the hostel mess in June this year. Students had also been demanding the renovation of the Pre-University College (PUC) block stating that it lacked the required capacity in the hostel, mess, or even classrooms.
IIIT Basara is making headlines for quite some time now due to students’ protests over several administrative issues including the quality of the food being served in the hostel mess. The students with their recent hunger strike also demanded implementation of the assurances given by the state government to call off their protest last month. They demanded the removal of the caterers for serving poor quality food that allegedly resulted in food poisoning and other health problems.
IIIT-Basar students are on hunger strike since Saturday night as a protest against the quality of food provided at the technology institute since the food poisoning issue. The first and second-year students of engineering have boycotted three meals demanding to appoint a new caterer. The protest was also joined by the parents.
Nearly 15 parents of IIIT Basara students were detained in front of the residence of education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy when they tried to submit a representation to her.
They were petitioning the minister about the protest by students after over 500 of them fell sick after having lunch at the college mess almost two weeks back. Many of them are yet to recover.
The parents refused to leave the place when informed that the minister was not at home. Banjara Hills police detained them at the police station.
