The student was found dead by the police, who had been called after a foul smell began coming from the closed room in the Lala Lajpat Rai Hall. He was a third-year mechanical engineering student. 

A student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was reportedly found dead in a hostel room of the institute. The body of the 23-year-old student was found by the police, who had been called after a foul smell began coming from the closed room in the Lala Lajpat Rai Hall. The victim, a third-year mechanical engineering student, was a resident of Tinsukia in Assam.  

While the reason for death is yet to be ascertained, reports cite it could be a suicide case. No foul play was suspected as of now and the authorities are are looking into the circumstances behind the death, an official at IIT Kharagpur said.

The body has been handed over to the family after the postmortem examination. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “Deeply pained by the unfortunate death of Faizan Ahmed, a bright young student from Tinsukia studying at the prestigious IIT Kharagpur. My condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace. 

Recently, a 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh was found hanging in his hostel room at IIT Guwahati. The police said the deceased, identified as Gudla Mahesh Sai Raj, allegedly committed suicide due to mental pressure. He was a fifth-semester BTech computer science and engineering student.
