In a first, IITs to recruit faculty on basis of quota
Earlier, there was no SC/ST/OBC quota for recruiting at senior positions at the IITs for courses other than humanities and management.
For the first time since these were established, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have placed advertisements for quota-based hiring in senior positions such as professors and associate professors.
The Ministry of Education has been pushing for reservations in faculty positions at centrally funded higher education institutions (HEIs) since 2009. The recruitment process has been changed after directions from the Centre.
IIT BHU, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur have started inviting applications from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories for the posts of professors and associate professors.
Earlier in August this year, the Centre had asked all central institutes, including the IITs, to fill all vacancies, including reserved ones, by September 4, 2022.
As per the previous norms, the IITs had no quota for ST/SC and OBC candidates in the recruitment for senior positions other than in humanities and management faculties. Even at entry level, educational institutes could de-reserve the post after some time if they fail to find appropriate candidates from reserved categories.
In June last year, a panel was set up to recommend the implementation of reservations in central education institutes. It had stated that the IITs were institutes of national importance and should be exempted from reservation. The committee had stated that the IITs should be given the authority to take decisions on quota-based recruitment and professor and associate professor positions should be exempted for the same.
