ISRO to set up space research centre at NIT Patna

The Indian Space Research Organisation will also provide annual financial aid of INR 2 crore per year for undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD., and teaching departments at the the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna.

NIT Patna and ISRO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up ‘Regional Academic Centre for Space’ to promote research related to space at the institute. The centre will facilitate advanced research in the field of space technology, space science and space applications important for space programmes being run under eastern Indian states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sikkim. The centre is open to any eastern Indian institute that needs experimental support. 

NIT Patna Director PK Jain said, “The institute will now serve as the eastern region’s mentor institute for space research, thanks to the establishment of the Regional Academic Centre for Space (RAC-S). “In order to meet the requirements of the ISRO, it will promote research activities in various fields such as electronics, communication technology, material science and remote sensing. With the help of the ISRO, we will submit a joint research project based on the topics and ideas that experts share with us. The scientists will supervise, monitor, and guide the project, “he stated.  

ISRO will also provide financial assistance to the tune of INR 2 crore per year for research projects, undergraduate, post graduate, PhD programmes and teaching faculties, it said. The centre will offer long-term research and development opportunities for PhD scholars and faculty. The projects can be individual or inter-college and will be reviewed first by NIT Patna and then by ISRO. 

ISRO has established a total of five regional academic centres across India. These are IIT-BHU (Varanasi), NIT Kurukshetra, MNIT Jaipur, NITK Surathkal and Gauhati University.
