The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) Law (Amendment) Bill, 2020, is approved the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister. According to the official statement, the five IIITs declared as the ‘Institutes of National Importance’ with powers to award degrees will develop a strong research base in the country in the field of information technology by attracting more students.

The objective behind the approval of the amendment bill is to formalise the IIITs at Raichur, Agartala, Bhagalpur, Bhopal, and Surat. Earlier, these IIITs were functioning under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. Now, they will be covered under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017, as same as the other 15 IIITs established under the PPP mode’s scheme.

The official statement also stated that the IIITDM Kurnool, established as per the IIIT Act, 2014, is functioning with the other 4 IIITS namely IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Allahabad, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIITDM Kancheepuram. Under this proposal, the already existing posts of registrars and directors in these IIITs have been merely formalized without any additional financial outgo.
