Thrissur government engineering college's student infected with shigella bacteria

One case of Shigella bacteria has been confirmed in the Thrissur engineering college, and another 50 students in the hostel are under observation.

After one student is found to be infected with the Shigella bacteria in Thrissur government engineering college, the health department of Kerala has increased its vigil against the bacteria. Nearly 50 students in the college's hostel are under observation. 

The authorities have taken samples from two more students for testing and other 37 have also reportedly developed symptoms of bacterial infection.

The health department has told people to be vigilant but not to panic, as reported by The Hindu.

No additional testing is required at this stage

As per the district medical officer, Dr NK Kuttapan, at this stage, no more tests are required and students are also reportedly reluctant to get tested. The one girl who has been tested positive has been kept in isolation and others who have developed the symptoms are also been advised to remain in the hostel only.

The source of the infection is being investigated, and the health and safety officials have inspected the canteen, college and surrounding areas. Also, the college union arts festival has been postponed.

What is Shigella infection?

It is called Shigellosis, caused by the bacteria Shigella. The common symptoms are diarrhea (sometimes bloody), stomach cramps, and fever. The symptoms normally appears after 1-2 days of infection and last seven days. 

Mostly people recover without any antibiotics but the people with severe illness and weak immune system needs antibiotic, as informed by the government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
