JEE Main 2022: SC directs NTA to consider plea against reducing sessions from four to two

A group of JEE Main 2022 aspirants had filed a petition in Supreme Court seeking direction to quash the National Testing Agency's (NTA) recent notice to reduce the sessions of JEE-Main from four to two. While maintaining that the court cannot interfere with the policy decision of NTA, the court has allowed petitioners to submit a representation before NTA to raise their grievances.

The plea said, β€œAll petitioners are willing to appear in JEE-Mains 2022 for admission to Engineering Colleges across India. Petitioners no 1-11 are currently in Class 12 and will be appearing for their board exams this year. They had planned their preparation in accordance with 4 attempts for JEE Mains. The sudden reduction of the number of attempts at the very last moment just 45 days before the exam without giving any prior notification has greatly disrupted their preparation. The candidates are greatly worried over their future/career and have been forced to consider not appearing for JEE Mains and are afraid that they might lose a year,” as reported by India Legal.

Justice Chandrachud said, "How do we now keep on interfering any policy? They have not changed the eligibility, course content or syllabus. Where do you have vested right?," as reported by Live Law.

"We will give you liberty to make representation with regard to this," he added.

SC bench disposes writ petition by JEE Main 2022 aspirants

The Supreme Court bench has disposed of the writ petition with the following order:

"Petitioners are aggrieved with the notification dated March 1, 2022 (amended on March 14, 2022) by which 2 sessions have been granted for JEE Mains 2022. The contention is that reduction from 4 sessions to 2 sessions would cause hardship. Since matter pertains to policy domain we can permit the petitioners to submit representation to competent authority for due consideration. Petition is disposed of"
