JJM Medical college interns protest for stipend

The interns of JJM Medical college Davangere are silently protesting for the stipend.

The candidates who were selected for Jagadguru Jayadeva Murugarajendra Medical College (JJMMC) under the government quota are working as interns at Chigateri district hospital and they were supposed to get a stipend for their job. The reports have emerged that these interns have not got any stipend for the last five and half months and their Covid-19 related incentives from the government is also pending.

On Thursday night, these interns held a candlelight march in front of the CG hospital to silently protest demanding the stipends. As part of their protest, the interns have also boycotted the OPD facilities and have said that if their demands are not met, they would intensify the protest.

For the last several years, the government used to pay the stipend to the Chigateri district hospital interns. However, during the ongoing pandemic time, the interns are not getting their stipend and the pandemic related incentive from the government. The interns have repeatedly requested the management and the department of medical education for the stipend but have still not received it. Both the government and management are blaming each other for the non-payment of the stipend.

The protesting students also met the medical education minister K Sudhakar over the issue but the response was not favourable for their demands. The students conducted a march across the city with the slogans 'Called a Hero but paid Zero', 'Doctors have no respect after covid came under control', 'Sarkarada Sahavasa Vetana Illade Upavasa'.
