Karnataka to upgrade 7 govt engineering colleges to KIT
In order to process the upgrade, the government has constituted a task force headed by the founder-director of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)-Bengaluru Professor S Sadagopan.
The state government of Karnataka has decided to upgrade seven engineering colleges. In order to process the upgrade, the government has constituted a task force. Haveri Government Engineering College, into the Karnataka Institute of Technology (KIT) is one of the colleges that have been listed for upgrade. Once upgraded, these colleges will offer education along the lines of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
INR 95 Crore allocated to seven colleges
The task force set up by the government comprises experts in the domain of technical education, who have been asked to submit a detailed project report (DPR) within two months on how the seven engineering colleges can be upgraded into KITs, according to TOI. Meanwhile, the government has allocated a sum of INR 95 crore to the seven colleges in the first phase of the project.
The engineering colleges selected for upgrading are Government Engineering College, Hassan; SKSJIT, Bengaluru; Government Engineering College, Haveri; Government Engineering College, KR Pete, Mysuru; Government Engineering College, Ramanagara; Government Engineering College, Talakal, Koppal; Government Engineering College, Karwar.
The task force will be headed by the founder-director of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)-Bengaluru Professor S Sadagopan, while chairman of Vision Group for Higher Education Research Professor LS Ganesh, Professor C Rajendra of the department of management studies at the International Institute of Management and Technical Studies, IIIT-Bengaluru professor Ramagopal Rao, Professor Chakrabarthy of IITKGP, Professor Manindra Agarwal, deputy director of the IIT Kanpur and Professor Y Narahari at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have been named as members on the task force. Finally, the director of the department of technical education will serve as the member-secretary of the task force, as per TOI report.
The task force would select two departments in the seven engineering colleges, in keeping with placement, and will submit proposals on how best to upgrade these colleges, Minister for higher education CN Ashwath Narayan informed. “The task force will decide the requirement of each of these colleges in terms of infrastructure, hostel, and faculty,” the minister said.
Ashwath Narayan said that the experts would help adopt modular systems for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. “Once the task force is submitted by the task force, we will implement the recommendations, with the government reserving a sum of INR 710 crore towards this initiative,” he said.
Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai told TOI, “I have earmarked a sum of Rs 710 crore towards the upgrading of seven engineering colleges as Karnataka Institute of Technology in the next five years, which will help produce a skilled pool of human resources.”
