Several students from Kerala Technological University have been demanding the postponement of semester exams, which are scheduled to take place from tomorrow (January 29), due to the rising COVID-19 cases. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has also come out in support of the students.

He tweeted, “Amidst the grave Covid situation where multiple Universities have postponed exams, Kerala Technological University should concede student demands for semester examination postponement. Student lives are precious and should not be put at risk to fulfil a procedural deadline.”

Students have now started using social media platforms, especially Twitter, to raise their demands. Students of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) started a campaign on Twitter. Fearing the COVID contagion, the students were urging authorities to conduct online exams. IGNOU students also took to social media to trend “Justice for IGNOU students” to demand for online or blended exams.

Kerala has reported more than 51,000 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, taking the number of COVID cases to over 58 lakh. The death toll has also increased to 52,343 with 68 COVID-19-related deaths being registered.

The Kerala Government closed schools on January 14 until further notice. Classes 1 to 9 have been shifted to online mode while Classes 10 to 12 and colleges are continuing with the offline mode.

The fourth semester examinations at Kerala Technological University will begin on January 29, while the seventh semester examinations for BTech courses will start on January 31, 2022.
