Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that BCI has informed that it has earmarked nearly 500 law colleges in India that are sub-standard and it may consider closing some of them based on further inquiry.
While replying to a written query on whether the Bar Council of India (BCI) is taking measures to monitor law colleges, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the Bar Council of India has earmarked 500 institutions in India that are a sub-standard and a legal team led by some former judges, senior advocate and noted academicians plans to conduct surprise visits of such colleges.
"In order to revamp the system, it has earmarked about 500 Institution throughout the country who are sub-standard/below standard and team led by some former Judge(s)/Senior Advocate(s) noted academicians plan to conduct surprise visits of such Institutions and if any Institution is found to be below standard," said the minister.
He said that if any colleges are found to be below standard in having a sufficient number of faculties or in terms of infrastructure, then the Legal Education Committee of BCI will take immediate steps to close such colleges, as reported by Live Law.
BCI should monitor law colleges in a stringent manner: SC
While hearing a case in Supreme Court on March 15, 2022, the bench had suggested that BCI must monitor the law colleges in a stringent manner to ensure that they are maintaining the parameters set by Council.
"With respect to the specific observations made as per the order of the Supreme Court of India, Bar Council of India has constituted a High-Level Committee including many senior Advocates and some former Judges of Supreme Court/High Courts to look into the above-said issues," said the law minister.
