AIBE Cutoff: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition demanding the lowering down the cut-off for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). The AIBE is conducted to issue a Certificate of Practice (CoP) to lawyers. The Bar Council of India is expected to release the AIBE 19 exam dates 2024 along with AIBE 19 Notification 2024 anytime soon. The BCI will hold AIBE 19 Exam in pen-and-paper mode.

The Apex Court decision comes in light of the recent data which showed that over 50 per cent of candidates failed to clear the 2023 AIBE.It must be noted that in AIBE 18 Exam only 48.36 percent of candidates were able to pass. The BCI informed said that "a total of 1,48,781 candidates had registered for the exam, out of whom 1,44,014 appeared. Out of the people who appeared, 69,646 (48.36%) passed and 74,368 (51.64%) failed."

A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that if the cut-off is reduced it will effect the quality of lawyers in the country. “They have put a cut off of 45 for the general category and 40 for SC/ST. What kind of lawyer will the person be if they cannot score this much? You are asking to lower it to 40 and 35!” CJI said. “Padho bhai! (please study),” CJI told the petitioner in passing, as per the media reports.

With maintaining the current Cut-off score, the SC aims to ensure that only the most qualified lawyers enter the legal profession, to ensure quality of legal services provided to the public.
