MS College of Law asked to refund excess fees to students

Reportedly, the state Fee Regulating Authority (FRA) has penalised the MS College of Law from Mumbra for overcharging students and also directed the college management to refund the excess money to the students.

As per the TOI report, the excess money charged from 98 students totalled around INT 17 lakh.

MS College of Law charged INR 7030 more than the actual fees

FRA had fixed the fees of the three-year LLB programme from MS College of Law, Mumbra at INR 20,000 per annum. However, the college charged INR INR 7030 over and above the sum from each student of the 2018-19 batch.

While taking action based on a complaint received from a student, FRA has directed the college to return the money back to the students and also penalised the college with a fine of INR 5 lakh as it was the college's first violation of the fee law. Usually, in such cases, the extreme penalty could go up to twice the amount of excess fees charged from the students.

The college's management is found guilty of breaching the mandatory provisions of the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Fees) Act, 2015.

The college has asked FRA to take a lenient view in the matter. "It is a minority institution catering to the needs of poor students in a remote area," said the college management.
