CLAT Consortium has removed the NLSIU Bangalore VC from the post of Secretary-Treasurer after the law school decided to conduct its own law entrance exam. Read here to know more.
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore has removed itself from the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2020 following a press release shared by CLAT Consortium. The conflict of interests raised after NLSIU Bangalore decided to conduct its own entrance exam before CLAT 2020 as the exam has been postponed at least five times due to COVID-19. In its admission notification, NLSIU has also mentioned that if the admissions are not concluded before September end then it will end up as Zero Year for academic yar 2020-21.
According to the press-release by CLAT Consortium, "NLSIU Bangalore Vice Chancellor, NLSIU is the Secretary- Treasurer of the Consortium, in the light of the clear conflict of interest between these the functions of the Consortium and his decision to hold independent test for NLSIU, the Consortium unanimously resolved to divest him of his functions as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Consortium with immediate effect. He is advised not to discharge these functions and not speak for the Consortium in any manner nor represent the Consortium in any proceeding till further decision in this matter is taken by the Governing Body part of CLAT Consortium anymore as per the notification shared after the law school's decision to conduct its own entrance exam."
Following this, the NLSIU Bangalore has also shared a press-release stating -
"NLSIU affirms that the University, and its Vice-Chancellor, have not violated the Consortium Bye-Laws. NLSIU has been a Founding Member of the Consortium, and has not acted in derogation of the objectives of the Consortium at any time and in any manner. Moreover, the Vice-Chancellor has not acted in any manner that gives rise to any potential for a conflict of interest. Hence, the claims made and decisions reported to have been taken by the Consortium in its Press Release dated 6th September have no legal basis or authority.
However, given the statements of the Consortium in its Press Release of 6 September, NLSIU, and its Vice-Chancellor, have no alternative but to completely disassociate from CLAT 2020. No member of the University, including the Vice-Chancellor or any member of staff shall hereafter participate in CLAT 2020 in any manner, administratively or otherwise.
