NLSIU: Karnataka Assembly clears National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill, 2020

The Karnataka Assembly has cleared the National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which aims to offer a 25% quota for domicile students at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore.

The National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill, 2020 stated that nearly 8 law schools have a similar reservation for domiciles and it was time that NLSIU Bangalore must provide the same, as reported by Bar and Bench.

National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill, 2020 Details

The Bill provides a reference to the Yatin Kumar Jasubhai Patel v/s State of Gujarat in W.A.No. 7939 of 2019 dated October 4, 2019, where the Supreme Court said, "Once the institutional preference to the extent of 50% of the total number of open seats has held to be permissible, in that case, thereafter it will be for the appropriate authority/state to consider how much percentage seats are to be reserved for institutional preference/reservation. It will be in the realm of a policy decision and this court cannot substitute the same, unless it is held to be arbitrary and/or mala fide and/or not permissible."

"Now therefore initially it is considered necessary to provide for 25% seats of Karnataka Students in National Law School of India, University Bangalore by amending the Karnataka National School of India Act, 1986," added the Bill.
