The CJI has said that prior to NLUs, it was largely those students whose family members were lawyers who chose to read the law.
National Law Universities have democratized legal education in India, said Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India. The CJI has said that prior to NLUs, it was largely those students whose family members were lawyers who chose to read the law.
Dr Chandrachud speaking during the thirty-first Convocation at NLSIU, Bangalore while delivering his Presidential Address as the Chancellor said that the National Law School, Bangalore is synonymous with exceptional legal education.
“Its establishment marked the democratization of legal education in India and in many ways, the democratization of the legal profession itself. Prior to the advent of the NLUs, it was largely those students whose family members were lawyers who chose to read law,” said the CJI.
He added that with the establishment of NLSIU, the doors of the legal profession were thrown open and more and more students without any connection to the legal community chose to pursue law.
CJI expressing his concern regarding doubts in the minds of young law graduates said that many of you may be worried about what the future holds for you. He said: “Some of you may be worried that you may not make the right decisions in your professional life. Rest assured, young friends, that there is no cause for concern. I, too, remember being all of twenty-four years of age while leaving the comfort of my alma mater, uncertain of the strength of my choices. With the benefit of hindsight and a good four decades in the legal profession, I can tell you that there is no such thing as a wrong decision.”
“If you embark upon a particular path today, you are not bound to it for life! If, for example, you have chosen to be a transactional lawyer or a litigator or an academic for now, embrace the role with all your heart. If you are dissatisfied, you can always choose another position. Remembering that no decision is set in stone can ease the pressure that you may feel to take the “right” decision at every stage in your career,” said the Chief Justice of India.
