After Madhya Pradesh introduced MBBS textbooks in Hindi, other states have also announced starting MBBS courses in their local languages to give options to medical students.

Maharashtra to start MBBS in Marathi from next academic session

Amid the ongoing debate in the medical fraternity on starting MBBS in Hindi and other languages, now Maharashtra is also all set to start the medical courses in the Marathi language from next academic session.

According to the reports, students will start studying MBBS in the Marathi language in the medical colleges of Maharashtra from the next academic session i.e. 2023, as reported by Indian Express.

The state government said that by starting MBBS in Marathi, the access to programs up to degree level for non-English speaking students will increase. The study in Marathi will be completely optional for students from rural parts of the state, added the government.

The Background

Recently, MBBS textbooks in Hindi are introduced in Madhya Pradesh, after which Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also announced starting medical and engineering courses in Hindi next year. Later on, Tamil Nadu also said that they are planning MBBS in Tamil and now Maharashtra also announced similar plans.

However, medical experts are not pleased with this new development and they think that it will only decline the standards of medical education in India. Recently, the National President of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), Dr Rohan Krishnan said it is a retrograde step. However, the government thinks otherwise. A recent tweet by Home Minister Amit Shah reads, "Education in native languages will fully unlock India’s potential. A person’s intellectual capability has a better chance of sparkling brighter if education is imparted in one’s mother tongue."
