The Chief Minister emphasized that the establishment of an IIM in Assam will be transformative, fostering collaboration among premier institutes.

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad will mentor the new institute in Assam

The Union government has approved the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the Kamrup district near Guwahati. The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described the approval as a "special gift" from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad) will mentor the new institute, ensuring it meets the high standards of excellence associated with IIMs across India. IIM Ahmedabad will lead the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the upcoming IIM, in close consultation with the Assam government, as confirmed by a letter from the Ministry of Education.

Chief Minister Sarma extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support in this initiative. "Over the last 18 months, we presented a strong case to the Hon’ble Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Ji and the Education Ministry," said Sarma. "Assam offered premier land and logistical support for this endeavour. Now IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the upcoming IIM in Guwahati. This will be a game changer for Assam, making the state an education hub in Eastern India and also helping fulfill our economic aspirations."

The new IIM will be located at Marabhita in the Kamrup district. In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the strategic importance of this development. “Following our request in 2023, PM Modi has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, National Law University, and now IIM,” he stated.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the establishment of an IIM in Assam will be transformative, fostering collaboration among premier institutes and unleashing the power of multidisciplinary education. He credited the swift transformation from idea to execution to the efficiency of the BJP-ruled government, referring to it as the "power of a Double Engine government."

With this new addition, Assam is set to enhance its reputation as a burgeoning education hub in Eastern India, providing residents with new opportunities and helping fulfill their economic aspirations.
