The proportion of Indians willing to work abroad has dropped notably from 78% in both 2018 and 2020 to 54% in 2023. Indian Professionals Prioritize Emotional Attachment Over Overseas Work Opportunities

A recent survey conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has shed light on shifting trends in Indians' willingness to pursue employment opportunities abroad. The survey, titled the 'International Mobility Trends,' revealed a significant decline in the percentage of Indian respondents expressing interest in working overseas.

Key findings from the survey indicate that the proportion of Indians willing to work abroad has dropped notably from 78% in both 2018 and 2020 to 54% in 2023. This decline marks a substantial shift in attitudes towards global work opportunities among Indian professionals.

Among the reasons cited for reluctance to relocate, a remarkable 59% of Indian respondents expressed a strong emotional attachment to their country, surpassing the global average of 33%. This sentiment underscores a deep-rooted connection to India among its workforce.

The survey, which gathered data from over 1.5 lakh respondents across 188 countries, highlighted that while moving abroad for work remains a dream for many globally, the desire among Indian professionals has seen a notable decrease. Factors influencing decisions to work overseas primarily include professional progression, financial incentives, and career development opportunities.

India's rising prominence as a preferred working destination was also highlighted in the survey. Over the past five years, India has gained six rank points on the global index of preferred working destinations. Major cities such as Bengaluru and Delhi continue to be sought-after hubs for career opportunities within the country, although their rankings on the global stage have experienced a slight decline. Notably, Ahmedabad has entered the top 100 global cities for the first time, indicating growing recognition of its potential as a thriving work environment.

Neetu Chitkara, Managing Director & Partner, India Lead People and Organization Practice at BCG, emphasized India's emergence as a beacon for professionals seeking dynamic career opportunities. Chitkara emphasized that by fostering an attractive work environment, India can continue to attract top talent, both locally and globally, solidifying its position as a global business hub.

While the survey underscores a declining interest among Indians in pursuing work abroad, it also emphasizes the importance of employers in supporting relocation and fostering an inclusive culture for international workers. Expectations among workers include assistance with housing, visa and work permit support, relocation assistance, and language training.

The findings of the survey suggest a shifting landscape in Indian professionals' attitudes towards global work opportunities, with implications for both domestic and international labor markets.
