AICTE in its notice has stated that EdTech companies cannot offer courses under a franchise arrangement with any higher education institution.

After the UGC issued public notice against EdTech companies offering degree and diploma courses, the technical education regulator, All India Council for Technical Education has also issued a notice stating EdTech companies are not eligible to offer degree or diploma courses.

Taking note of advertisements by EdTech companies across various media platforms offering technical courses like MBA, MCA through online and distance mode, the AICTE has stated that such courses are not permitted.

The AICTE has also stated that EdTech companies cannot offer courses under a franchise arrangement with any higher education institution.

The AICTE Notice reads: “It has come to the notice of AICTE that some Edutech companies are giving advertisement in the newspaper/ social media/television etc. offering MBA, MCA and other degree and diploma programs in conventional /ODL/Online modes in association with some universities/institutions approved by the Council. Such franchise arrangement is not permissible.”

As per the AICTE, the Council grants approval to a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 or a Trust registered under the Indian Trust Act, 1882 or a company established under section 8 or to the Central Government or State Government/ U.T. for setting up and running an institution offering courses under Technical Education.

The Council also accords approval to the Deemed-to be-Universities and Stand-alone institutions and recommends the case of Universities for running programs in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and/or Online mode to the UGC.

The details of the institutions and the courses approved by AICTE is available on www.aicte-india.org. All the stakeholders are hereby informed that they should check the recognition status on the AICTE website.
A similar kind of notice has been issued by the University Grants Commission yesterday advising students to check for approved courses on its official website.
