While many foreign medical graduates (FMGs) have reached Gujarat High Court to seek exemption from the internship, reportedly, 650 foreign medical graduates have agreed to do the internship in Gujarat. 46 FMGs who studied medicine in the Philippines filed a writ petition in Gujarat HC demanding exemption from the internship requirement in India and permanent registration without the compulsory internship.

As per reports, nearly 250 students including those who returned from the Philippines had approached the Gujarat High Court to seek exemption from internship and demanded permanent registration in India. However, the remaining 650 FMGs have agreed to pursue internships in Gujarat.

As per the guidelines, those FMGs who pursue their medical education in other countries including Germany, China, Philippines, Ukraine, and Russia and China every year, on returning to India, they must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and apply for FMG CRMI (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship) to get the practising license here. However, many FMG students including those who studied in the Philippines have sought exemption from CRMI.

On this, the court has issued the notice to the Gujarat government, National Medical Council and Gujarat Medical Council.

The single judge bench of Justice Vaibhavi D Nanavati issued the notice and said, "Considering the aforesaid submissions, it is open for the petitioners herein to apply for FMG CRMI (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship) & Provisional Registration and the same would be subject to final outcome of this petition," as reported by Live Law.

Also, amid this row, the state medical council has announced that counselling for internships will start on May 4, 2023.

As per the TOI report, sources have revealed that Gujarat Medical Council has instructed all FMGs including those who reached the court to remain present for the counselling sessions.
