AIIMS Darbhanga: Centre rejects new site proposed by Bihar govt

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has rejected the new site in Darbhanga district proposed by the Bihar government for establishing the state’s second All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

As per the Hindustan Times report, the union government has termed the new site as “unsuitable” and requested the state government to provide alternative land for the project, officials familiar with the matter said.

The Centre rejected the allocated land after a ground visit by a team of health ministry officials in April. The government has said in the letter to the Bihar government that the proposed land was a low-lying area and the challenge to fill and compact the total area of approximately 151 acres with quality soil would be a costly and time-consuming process.

"There may be a possibility of waterlogging in the surrounding lowland areas if structures are built on filled-up land. The resultant drainage issues at the site may be compounded as the surface layer of natural ground has low permeability," the letter read, as reported by India Today.

While reacting to the Central government's stand, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that there will be something else in the mind of the central government. Targeting the BJP regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Nitish Kumar said that good work will be done when these people move away. He said that the media should also go and see that place. Preparations are also going on to convert road into four-lane at the proposed site. Darbhanga's hospital will also be improved, he added, as reported by ABP live.
